There is money, money, and more money to be found and claimed. Over $14 billion of unredeemed savings bonds alone are just waiting to be claimed by the rightful owners. Found money is being reported daily to your state's unclaimed property office. Claiming found money and unclaimed funds has basically the same requirements as other unclaimed property.

Find Out if You Are Owed Money

Why not? There are many reasons why you may be owed money from the government. It could be a matter of never receiving a paycheck that you were owed or an insurnace policy. With such an enormous amount of money that is unclaimed, it stands to reason that you may be the owner of unclaimed money. The only way to answer that question, is to contact your state unclaimed property office to inquire about property that is possibly listed in your name.  Find out if there is money owed to you by getting the information on our Information Listing page. You may also register for our Free Assistance program. We will search for your unclaimed money for you. There is no fee for this service.

How to Safeguard Against Losing Your Assets

There are several steps that can be taken to protect your assets from being lost, misplaced or forgotten.

  • When you move, remember to contact your places of employment, financial institutions (banks, government agencies, utility companies, etc.), informing them of your forwarding address.
  • Keep a record of utility deposits, rent deposits and stock certificates.
  • Record all bank accounts and include the name of the bank, your account number(s), amount in your accounts, the address and telephone number of your bank and any other information that will keep your assets safe.
  • Keep a record of all safe deposit box contents. Include in that record, the box number, the bank address and location, and give a family member, whom you trust, your spare key for safekeeping.
  • When preparing your will, list all of the above assets in your will with the details of their whereabouts.

If you follow these steps, it's a good start with keeping up with your assets. Always let a close relative know where these documents are kept in case of an emergency and they are needed immediately.  Other sites that are great for searching for unclaimed money is NAUPA or National Association of Unclaimed Property Administration and Missingmoney.com.
