When you start your national unclaimed property search, don't forget to have documents needed to claim your lost or abandoned assets. In order to claim government unclaimed money these are some of the documents that are required when verifying ownership of unclaimed money:

  • Social Security Number
  • Birth Certificate
  • Death Certificate

Social Security Number: When claiming unclaimed property, lost assets, abandoned property, etc., by verifying your social security number, when asked, you will be identified as the owner of this property. It is very important to have the social security number for the person or persons that you are claiming money for.

Birth Certificate: If you are claiming unclaimed funds for a relative, living or deceased, you may have to provide a copy of your birth certificate. Prove who you are and that you are the owner of unclaimed property. This is sometimes required because of numerous amounts of people have the same name. Sometimes it may make a difference with having a middle name to prove that you are the owner of said property. Also, if you are claiming unclaimed assets belonging to a deceased relative, it is required that you provide a birth certificate of yourself and a death certificate of the deceased relative.

Death Certificate: If you have a deceased relative, it is up to you to prove that you are entitled to that relative's assets. Whether it is a lost bank account, stocks and bonds, lost mutual funds, winning lottery tickets, lawsuit settlements, insurance proceeds and etc., you have to provide a copy of the deceased relative's death certificate among other documents that may be required.

Marriage Certificate: If your spouse is deceased and you are claiming property owned by that spouse, you must provide a copy of a marriage certificate and a copy of the death certificate of the deceased spouse upon claiming unclaimed money as well as birth certificates and such.

Address Verification: When people get married and move from a previous address, it is sometimes necessary to prove the street address where you lived previously.
