Find your unclaimed funds by searching the state unclaimed property sites.  Search any state that you have lived and worked in.  If you have deceased relatives that lived in different states than you, and you are possibly the beneficiary of your relative's estate, you can search for property that was owned by your deceased relatives.  To find unclaimed funds listed in your name or that of a relative, contact your state unclaimed funds office.

How to Claim Unclaimed Funds

Make a note of properties that you are searching for and list the name of companies that you may have worked for.  If there is a possibility that a company you worked for owes you money, it is worth checking out. 

Not only work related funds may be owed to you.  Other unclaimed funds, such as tax refunds, government checks, insurance policies, rent and utility refunds, lost money orders, and other unclaimed properties could be funds that are owned by you and has never been claimed.

To find out if any property of unclaimed funds that has a monetary value and is owed to you, inquiries should be made to your state unclaimed property office in the state that you live and/or worked.

Claiming unclaimed funds owed to you by the government brings a few suggestions to mind.

  1. First of all, you should prepare yourself in case you are truly a real unclaimed property owner.  How?  By having documents (including birth certificate, driver's license or state identification, and etc.) that may be required when claiming these properties.

  2. Making sure you have a list of companies that you worked for.
  3. List the different states where you lived and worked.
  4. Create a list of all of your past addresses as well as your present address.

The state unclaimed property offices of each state are the overseers for unclaimed funds for their individual state. There are many different types of unclaimed funds that can be claimed and it is your money to claim.  There aren't any fees for claiming money that is already yours (check out the requirements for your state).


Who Can Claim Unclaimed Funds

Anyone who finds their name listed in a state unclaimed property database can claim whatever funds listed in their names after their identity has been verified.  Remember, sometimes there is property listed in a last name only.  So, it would be wise to check your state unclaimed property database to see if you can identify property that may be owned by you.

Anyone, young or old can be owners of unclaimed property.  How?  There could be a number of reasons how this would prove true.  One reason being, young children as well as adults are heirs of an estate that their parents or grandparents left to them.  Or it could be that other relatives and friends named them as the beneficiaries of their estates.

Refunds

There are several types of unclaimed refunds. Among those properties are customer refunds, Medicare refunds, subscription, catalog, aggregate refunds and various other refunds.  These types of refunds are usually from an over payment of those goods or services.


Benefits

Benefits that goes unclaimed includes medical benefits, social security benefits, retirement benefits and veteran’s benefits.  If your checks were never delivered to your address, lost or stolen, calling your state unclaimed property office is the first step to claiming your unclaimed benefits.

Abandoned, Lost and Unclaimed Accounts

We know that there are lost, abandoned, and unclaimed bank accounts. But, there are also other accounts that are also unclaimed. Employers lose records of their accounts.  There are accounts payable accounts, aggregate accounts payable, aggregate savings accounts, group accounts, industrial accounts, retirement accounts, government accounts, aggregate CD interest accounts, block club accounts, Christmas savings accounts SSI Social Security, US Government Social Security and various other accounts.



Missing Persons

There are missing persons who couldn’t or can’t be located. Some of these missing persons are beneficiaries of estates. Because these beneficiaries can’t be located, these accounts are listed as a deceased estate or missing legatee and some are labeled as unclaimed funds for no named beneficiaries.
